SUMMER ENTERTAINMENT ON GRANVILLE ISLAND PROGRAM 2008
(SEGI PROGRAM 2008)

APPLICATION INFORMATION

The mandate of this program is to pre-program Triangle Square and Public Market Courtyard with high-quality, dynamic entertainment during the peak tourist season on Granville Island.
This program is for experienced performers only.
The program runs all day Saturdays, Sundays, and Holiday Mondays from May 17 to September 14 2008. Fridays also have programming from 11am to 3pm in June and all day in the peak months of July and August.
Performers are not paid however accepting donations and selling CDs/DVDs during performances is permitted.
Application packages must be received by 5pm March 31, 2008 to be considered for SEGI 2008. Packages received after this date will only be considered from NEW Granville Island Buskers (not current Granville Island Busker Licence holders) and only as space allows.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

1. Showmanship
How well you sell your "product", be it a song or a trick. The audience is not overly aware of the sales pitch (i.e. you are not too pushy). You engage the audience. You incorporate the audience regardless of size. You successfully create a look for your act. You create and effectively execute a character/theme/ambience. Your act is polished.

2. Proficiency
You demonstrate an ability and talent in your chosen field. You possess above average technical skills. Your instruments are in tune, your vocals are on key, your speaking is clear and easy to understand, you do not drop a lot of juggling instruments, and you do not create an unwarranted sense of panic while executing your act. Your performance is engaging and defined throughout the beginning, middle and end.

3. Uniqueness
You possess a unique quality, giving you an interesting edge and making you unlike other performers. Uniqueness can be subtle or dramatic but makes you intriguing to watch

4. Professionalism
You have all your equipment present and in good working order. Your equipment enhances the quality of your performance. Your sound levels are within acceptable levels. You are present and ready to start on time. You present a professional and complete package both in the promotional package and in a live performance setting.

5. Appropriateness
You are appropriate for the family oriented nature of Granville Island (a score of zero in this category will automatically eliminate you from eligibility).

APPLICATION PROCESS

Application packages should be full promo packages including the following:
Completed and legible application form
Resume including: Contact information (both home and, if applicable, on the road),
Biography, Description of Act,
List of Festivals and Events performed at recently,
References (if not a current Granville Island Busker)
Set list (if applicable),
Photos (including a shot of you performing your act),
Press, References etc illustrating why you belong in SEGI
VHS, DVD or website of your current live performance, **
Professional studio recording on CD or DVD,
Your schedule between May and September (as much as possible), including planned festivals and when you plan on being in Vancouver

**If no VHS or DVD of live performance is available, send your promo package to us with an application form, and at Granville Island Cultural Society's discretion, a live audition may be scheduled for you for a fee of $30.

A professional selection committee will evaluate all applications. Decisions will be based on the criteria listed and professionalism and quality are key elements. The committee's decisions are final and not open to appeal. Performers not accepted are not permitted to re-apply until the 2009 season. Applications that do not meet minimum requirements will not be forwarded to the selection committee.

SEGI 2008 PERFORMERS: IMPORTANT TO NOTE

Live Auditions will be 20 minutes for Musicians and 45 minutes for Circle Shows.

Accepted applicants will become part of the Summer Entertainment on Granville Island Program. Applicants must, upon acceptance into SEGI:
1) Obtain a 2008-2009 Granville Island busking licence ($50 for individuals/$110 for groups).
2) Read and sign a letter of agreement stating the expectations of both buskers and program.

The Triangle Square and the Public Market Courtyard will be pre-programmed by the Granville Island Cultural Society based on your stated availability and the availability of the spaces. There is no guarantee as to when or how many times a performer will be scheduled. Programming is arranged to have a mix of variety and musical performances throughout the day, and performances of a similar nature are not scheduled back to back unless unavoidable.

Traveling circle shows and guest performers are scheduled in the Triangle Square at the discretion of the Granville Island Cultural Society and CMHC-Granville Island.

SEGI performers are encouraged to attend the 10:00am draw to select other busking locations.
